Hollywood actress, filmmaker, and humanitarian Angelina Jolie wins the hearts of millions as she pays a visit to Pakistan to help the flood-affected families, in addition to analyzing the current situation of the flood relief efforts.
Pakistan was hit with calamity after one-third of the country was affected by floods. According to BBC, it affected the lives of some 33 million people and caused at least 1,343 deaths. Many people, including celebrities and politicians, came forward to help the victims with whatever aid they could provide.
Amidst the situation, Angelina Jolie has arrived in Pakistan with the International Rescue Committee (IRS) to analyze the situation and to understand the needs of the people living in those areas whilst providing them with aid. She arrived in Dadu’s Zamzama oil fields via helicopter and used a boat to survey the area in Johi and its surrounding areas. She visited those areas and talked to the families.
This is Angelina’s third visit to Pakistan; she visited back in 2005 and 2010 to help the victims of the earthquake and floods, respectively.
According to IRS (International Rescue Committee), “Heavy rains and floods across the country have impacted 33 million people and submerged one-third of the country under water. Ms. Jolie is visiting to witness and gain understanding of the situation, and to hear from people affected directly about their needs, and about steps to prevent such suffering in the future.”
Shabnam Baloch, Pakistan Country Director at the IRC said:
“The climate crisis is destroying lives and futures in Pakistan, with severe consequences especially for women and children. The resulting economic loss from these floods will likely lead to food insecurity and an increase in violence against women and girls. We need immediate support to reach people in urgent need, and long term investments to stop climate change from destroying our collective futures. With more rains expected in the coming months, we hope Angelina Jolie’s visit will help the world wake up and take action.”
