It started with a mysterious teaser that was released a day ago and went trending when half the industry posted about receiving a silver box with an antique looking pendant and a scroll. That mystery has led us to the title reveal of upcoming film, Umro Ayyar, to release in 2022, possibly as Pakistan’s first superhero/fantasy flick.

“It feels great that we can finally let people know that this is coming out,” Usman Mukhtar, one of the leading names in the project spoke to Something Haute, adding that they were all under contract to ‘not say anything about anything’.

“We’ve been keeping this in for a year and haven’t been able to talk about it. And being a fan of Umro Ayyar since I was a child, it’s a dream come true for me. I speak for the rest of the cast as well, most of the people on the cast are big fans of Umro Ayyar too. I can’t explain how big of a dream it was, for me and Ali Kazmi both, we’re such big super hero fans. It’s a dream come true.”

This may be a dream come true for Pakistani cinemagoers too, who haven’t really been exposed to much beyond the rom-com genre in the past few years. Umro Ayyar, a character from Persian folklore, that dates back a century at least, brings with it fantasy, magic, adventure and many more mythical characters. If treated properly, this can be a game changer for Pakistani cinema.

As revealed in Usman Mukhtar’s post, it’s all about “…a magical land and evil jinns, of ancient lore and fights within, of modern visions and tales of glory!”

The film’s ensemble cast includes Usman Mukhtar, Faran Tahir, Ali Kazmi, Sanam Saeed, Simi Rael, Osama Karamat, Sana Fakhar, Menzar Sehbai with others. The film is directed by Azfar Jafri and is a VR Chili Production.
