We have seen Sohai Ali Abro playing a vivacious millennial Z (aka Zoya) in Jawani Phir Nahi Ani (2015). Later, she left us in awe after essaying an ambitious character in Motorcycle Girl. Nowadays the actress is shooting for a play — Surkh Chandni — about an acid attack survivor. All these characters are diametrically opposite to each other in spirit and execution but Sohai aces them all. She is not just a good actor but an exceptional dancer as well. With all this and more in her repertoire, surprisingly enough we don’t see her much on silver or small screen.

In an exclusive conversation with Something Haute, Sohai revealed why she is selective about her projects and what drives her to a role.

“I feel there is a problem with the way women are portrayed on screen or how their characters are written. They’re problematic. I’ve come to a point where I don’t want to do a film for the sake of being relevant or even for the heck of it,” she said.

Sohai explained that quality of the content plays a big part in her decisions.

“Good director and team matters but it isn’t a deciding factor. The most important thing is the idea or the story. If the story doesn’t click then I will never commit to a project,” Sohai said adding, “People think that I have become selective because Motorcycle Girl’s acclaim has gone to my head. I have become exclusive or will only do women-centric films but that’s not the truth. I love mindless comedy and would love to do one.”
