With a number of biopics releasing this year in Bollywood, none have made as much buzz as the possible upcoming film on the assassinated Indian prime minister, Indira Gandhi, which will be played by Vidya Balan.

According to Indian media, the actress will essay the role of Indira Gandhi in an adaptation of journalist Sagarika Ghose’s book Indira: India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister.

The journalist took to Twitter to announce that a deal has been signed between her publisher, Juggernaut Books, and Vidya on Wednesday. Previously, Vidya said in a statement that she was happy to have acquired the book rights because she has always wanted to play Indira Gandhi.

“I haven’t decided yet whether it should be a film or a web series, but that will take a while anyway,” she said.

Reportedly, the book explores issues such as the reasons behind the Emergency in 1975, Gandhi’s failed marriage, her turbulent relationship with her son Sanjay, and her numerous political battles.

How will Vidya Balan fare as fiery Indira Gandhi? Time will tell…
