With the 75th Golden Globes culminating Sunday night, it was a major celebration of women’s rights. From black gowns at the red carpet to some big words at the stage, the superstars of Hollywood made sure to leave no stones unturned in telling the world about their successes and treatment in the industry.

What went down? Here’s the lowdown…

The night against sexual abuse in Hollywood

Golden Globes

As the Golden Globes started, Seth Meyers opened his monologue with a nod to the ‘ladies and remaining gentlemen’ of Hollywood and unleashed a string of jokes about Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey. Although that might not have set well with everyone, Nicole Kidman set the tone when she spoke about portraying a character in Big Little Lies that “represents something that is in the center of our conversation right now: abuse. I do believe and hope that we can elicit change – through the stories we tell and the way we tell them.”

Oprah Winfrey’s winning speech for her honorary award

The night may have started off hours before Oprah’s speech, but it was her moving words while accepting her Cecil B. DeMille honorary award, which served as a testament to everything the #MeToo campaign stands for.

“I want all of the girls watching here now to know, that a new day is on the horizon,” Oprah said. “And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say, ‘me too’ again.”

Natalie Portman takes a jab at patriarchal Hollywood

Visibly moved from Oprah’s speech, the crowd was just settling in when Natalie Portman and Ron Howard came on stage to announce the next set of awards, and the sassiest of moments at the event happened! If Oprah’s Golden Globes speech was the definition of Hollywood’s strong approach to abuse, Natalie Portman just added more fuel to the fire.

Natalie and Ron took a moment to collect themselves before listing the Best Director nominees. But as Ron set her up for her line, Natalie was apparently preparing to go off-script.

“Here are the all-male nominees,” she said, eliciting gasps and looks of shock from the audience.

Big Little Lies wins big again!

 Golden Globes

Big Little Lies still seems to be the talk of the town as it continued its remarkable run. One of the major winners of the night, the show ended up winning Best Miniseries, Best Actress (Nicole Kidman) and Best Supporting Actor (Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd). The only award in the miniseries category the HBO show didn’t win was the only one it wasn’t nominated for, Best Actor. Now that’s major!
