If you think about it, it really is a big deal that Mahira Khan is at Cannes this year. The only Pakistani celebrity present there amidst a large number of international stars; including several from India.

Films star Shaan Shahid, however, isn’t too happy about it. Shaan left a rather rude comment on a Something Haute post about what Mahira would be wearing to Cannes. “An actor wears his work to a film festival!” he wrote. “What film is she representing? That to me is more important,” he added.

Actor Adnan Malik too shared similar concerns. “When did #Cannes stop being about films and start being about fashion?” he tweeted.

It’s true that Mahira hasn’t gone with a film to Cannes — and while we hope one day our stars are able to achieve that as well — being the first Pakistani to represent a brand as big as L’Oréal at Cannes is a huge accomplishment nonetheless. Mahira has made Pakistan proud on a number of occasions. Be it her super hit drama serial Humsafar, local movies contributing to the revival of Pakistani cinema or her Bollywood debut opposite none other than Shah Rukh Khan, she has proven to be a real trailblazer. We only wish more of our celebrities would be supportive of her instead of criticising.

Meanwhile, here are a few pictures of Mahira ahead of her Cannes red carpet debut:
