Unlike other countries in the world where their stars are celebrated, Pakistani stars are seldom appreciated for their recognition and Mehwish Hayat is no exception. After it was announced that Mehwish will receive Tamgha-i-Imtiaz at the Civil Awards ceremony on Pakistan Day, she received heavy backlash from people, questioning her credibility and the criterion on the basis of which she is being awarded. Mehwish has finally broken her silence and clapped back at the haters.

In her recent Instagram post, Mehwish expressed disdain about people accusing her character because she was chosen as a recipient.

“I feel I must address the nonsense that some people are spewing about my award. Debate all you like whether you think I deserve it or not, we live in a democracy and everyone is entitled to their opinions, I respect that. However, I do draw the line when my character is being questioned in the most filthy way. I never wanted to make this a gender thing but it is unfortunate that others seem to be,” she wrote.

She added that although she has been called by many names in the past, claiming that she has “slept her way to this award” is an abhorrent slur not only for her, but all hardworking women of Pakistan.

“We may be part of an industry that is seen to be glamorous but, that doesn’t mean we have forsaken our morals. What gives anybody the right to drag my name into the gutter with crude insinuations? You don’t know me,” she posted.

Mehwish received the honorary medal along with many other media personalities on March 23.
