Renowned Pakistani singer and qawwal Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has been awarded an honorary doctorate degree by the prestigious Oxford University on Wednesday.

The awarding ceremony took place at noon where the playback singer was presented with a Doctorate of Music. According to a news report by Geo News, Rahat was ecstatic to receive the honour.

“I am honoured to be accepting this degree from the Oxford University, a world famous educational institution. This is a very special day for my family and I, but also for my fans, who have shared this journey with me. To be presented with this honour is a massive achievement and I am happy that my music has allowed me to reach such incredible heights,” he said.

Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai was also in attendance as the two talked about the representation of Pakistan in international music world.

The report also said that after receiving his honorary doctorate, Rahat is set to perform at Oxford Town Hall today. The special evening will mark the occasion with a stellar performance of qawwalis by the singer, as well as explore his family legacy and look back at his career to date.
