It came as a surprise on Tuesday evening that Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai has “tied the knot” with Asser Malik in Birmingham.

“Today marks a precious day in my life,” she wrote in a post on Twitter. “Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life. We celebrated a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families. Please send us your prayers. We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead,” she announced with beautiful pictures of the ceremony.

Malala’s husband, Asser Malik, is the general manager of the PCB’s High Performance Centre. Malala wore a tea pink ensemble with intricate work and paired it with tikka and earrings. Asser wore a black suit and matched his tie to her outfit.

Malala’s father,  Ziauddin Yousafzai, also tweeted about his daughter’s marriage.

The news of the ceremony was well-received by tens of thousands of her fans online, with wishes for the newly-wed couple. Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and Jemima Goldsmith also replied on her tweet with congratulatory messages. On Instagram, Priyanka Chopra, Mira Sethi, Muniba Mazari and several others wished her.

Malala has graduated from Oxford University. Since graduating, Malala has called for better support for Afghan refugees, signed a contract with Apple TV+ to produce documentaries and appeared on the cover of British Vogue, all while continuing her work to improve girls’ access to education.

Malala has previously voiced her misgivings around marriage.

In an interview with Vogue in July, she said: “I still don’t understand why people have to get married. If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can’t it just be a partnership?” she continued. “My mum is like… ‘Don’t you dare say anything like that! You have to get married, marriage is beautiful’.”

Now that she has tied the knot, we wish the newly married couple a beautiful life ahead!
