The simpletons amidst us don’t ask for much beyond an entertaining movie, whether it is the visually engrossing Bajirao Mastani, the technically superior (Star Wars) or a simple animation like Kung Fu Panda. So when something as pleasant as Kapoor & Sons comes along, it’s a no brainer that the film will guarantee entertainment, if nothing else.

Luckily, like more Karan Johar productions, K&S provides a little more than a good looking cast working its way through a foreign location and fantastic soundtrack. This one gives us characters to relate to, enjoy and endear.

There’s really nothing original about the plot; we have seen the inside out of dysfunctional families from Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kabhi Alvidaa Naa Kehna and more recently, Dil Dhadakne Do. For those who remember, Monsoon Wedding was perhaps the first film that took the grand Indian wedding and made it a meltdown of romance, relationships, complications and family entanglements. Kapoor & Sons isn’t quite as original or convincing but it is just as entertaining.

The characters take it from strength to strength, whether it is the lecherous dada (Rishi Kapoor), the cantankerous mother (Ratna Pathak), the two-timing father (Rajat Kapoor) or the two sons (Fawad Khan and Siddharth Malhotra) who step in with skeletons in their respective closets. Aalia is the romantic twist in the tale and she gets another chance to prove how talented she is, even in a small role.

Fawad Khan, it can be said without bias, is the shining star who holds his own against this exceptionally talented ensemble of actors. In accepting to portray a character as different from his princely role in Khoobsurat, Fawad shows range and versatility. He is impressive and uninhibited and ensures a potentially successful future in Bollywood.

Verdict: Watch it and enjoy it without trying too hard to judge it for intellectual merits.
