We had been contemplating starting a new programme on our YouTube channel when, on a particularly boring night, I randomly played the first episode of Humsafar — mainly to see what the fuss was all about.

Twelve hours and some 10 episodes later, when I went to sleep I found myself to be living in the Hussain mansion, monitoring closely, scrutinizing how life was unfolding for Khirad and Ashar. I think I also rode with them in their black Mercedes on one occasion. It was as if Humsafar was being recorded through the lens of my eyes, not the camera.

As you’d expect, when I did finally wake up, I was completely aware what catapulted Fawad and Mahira to superstardom internationally, why people had been badgering me to watch this drama and why, most importantly, Humsafar is talked about even a decade later.

Find yourself someone who looks at you the way Ashar looks at Khirad

Thus was born Haute Gold — a new programme on Something Haute YouTube channel. A programme that would allow us to revisit classics and share our thoughts on said classics with all of you. The first episode then, of course, had to be about why Humsafar continues to remain not just relevant but also impactful. And to be able to do that, we needed to speak to those who created it.

Sarmad Khoosat — who directed Humsafar — and Mahira Khan — who brought Khirad to life (and how) — were kind enough to join us for a conversation and together we discussed what went into creating all that magic.

Here’s the complete first episode of Haute Gold; hope you like it:
